Shillong, August 24: On 23.08.2026 at about 5:40 AM, information was received at mawngap Police Station that susupected thieves had been apprehehded by the public at 11 Mer, Mylliem. The officer and personnel of Mawngap Police Station rushed to the spot and found a mob assaulting three suspected thieves.
Three person are identified as Shri. Banshan Kurbah 25 years, Shri. Albert Marbaniang 26 years, Smti. Ibalabet Kharmawlong 27years. Accordingly, Police intervened and rescued the three persons from the mob.
While rescuing them, the mob manhandled the officers and staff on duty, abuse them with offensive language and continued to assault the suspects. The injured persons were thereafter safely rescued and shifted to Pomlum PHC for medical examination and subsequently brought to Mawngap PS for safe custody.
The vehicle bearing Regn. No. ML05-T-9837 (Maruti Car) used by the alleged suspects was towed and kept at the PS premises for safe custody. Later, all three persons were released as no complaint was received against them from any end.
In connection with the incidents and assault on the three persons, a suo-moto case has been registered vide Mawngap P.S. case No. 51(08)2026U/S189(2) /191(2)(3) /118(2)/127(2)/132/221/352/324(4)/3(5) BNS and investigation taken up.
During investigation, two main accused who led the mob attack have been arrested namely (1) Shri Arningson Kharkongor@ Arning (37yrs), R/o Mylliem Kyndong, 11th Mile and (2) Shri Pynshaiborlang Kharkongor @ Lung Matok (33yrs), R/o Mylliem, Kyndong, 11th Mile and are being produced the Hon’ble Court. Further investigation is in progress.
The general public is hereby appealed not to take the law into their own hands and to immediately inform the Police by dialling 112 or by contacting the nearest Police Station in such cases.
