Ampati, August 21: An incident of elephant depredation was reported at Dakupara in South West Garo Hills district during the early hours of August 21, 2026, causing significant damage to two residential structures. No loss of human life was reported.
The incident occurred at around 3:00 AM, when an elephant damaged a kitchen belonging to Smt. Remol Hajong, wife of Nepalgre Hajong. The kitchen was severely damaged. The family comprises two adults.
In another incident, a dwelling-cum-store house belonging to Smt. Sonutibala Hajong, wife of Gopal Hajong, was also severely damaged.
Following the incident, an inquiry was conducted at around 8:00 AM by the concerned Gram Sevak, Shri Rajesh Koch, to assess the extent of damage.
The District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) is undertaking an assessment of the damages and is taking necessary steps for providing relief assistance to the affected families as per applicable provisions.
The district administration has also advised residents in vulnerable areas to remain alert and immediately report any elephant movement or related incidents to the concerned authorities.
