Baghmara accident, 8 dead in a bus tragedy in Garo hills

Tura, June 16: In a major bus accident in Meghalaya’s South Garo
Hills, at least eight people died and several others were injured.
The overcrowded Tura bound private bus (ML-08 A -7795) was on its way
to Baghmara town, about 120 km from here. Police have arrested the
driver of the bus April M. Sangma.

The accident took place at Balsrigitim around 9:30 am today, while it
was giving way to a sumo. It fell in a deep gorge about 30 feet high.
“It was an overcrowded bus. Four people died on spot and three others
in the hospital. 20 people sustained injuries, three of them
critical”, said superintendent of police, South Garo Hills, Lakador
Syiem.

One critically injured succumbed to his injuries near Dalu on his way
to Tura Civil Hospital. He was a working as an accountant at Sibbari
PHC.

The deceased have been identified as Persunath M. Marak, 75, Bodresh
Sangma, 60, Enila R. Marak, 38, Jasbina M. Sangma, 25, Robinath M.
Sangma, 30, Banila Ch. Sangma, 30 and Wisbon M. Sangma, 20.
The bus left for Baghmara from Tura at 6:30 am. There were many
government servants, who had board the bus. It had a capacity of 30
seats. It got overcrowded on its way.(SP News)
