BSF in Aid of the Border Population in Meghalaya

Shillong, April 10: The BSF organized a Civic Action Programme on 10th April 2013 in the Border area of Gumaghat of distt South West Khasi Hills ­­­­of Meghalaya. The programme was chaired by Sh. Sudesh Kumar, IPS IG BSF Meghalaya Ftr. The Dorbar heads of all the villages, local prominent leaders, Additional DC and other officials of the State administration also chaired the programme along with the IG BSF.  Appx. 400 People from village Karaigora, Kakergora, Nalikata, Rajapara, Majesora, Hemanagar, Tillagaon, Rajai, Randu, Barsora, and Gumaghat of distt South West Khasi Hills participated in the programme.

Civic Action programme are being conducted as a central plan to improve the quality of life and welfare of the border population, upgrade the existing infrastructure and create new avenues for bringing positive changes in the life of the border population.

The materials that was distributed to the local people of the areas are ,Power Tiller, Tulu Pump ,Wooden Chairs ,Water storage tanks, Dual desk bench ,Godrej Almirah,Water Filters ,Footballs (including Football shoes and dresses, Volleyball sets (Including dress and Net, Cricket Set ,Utensils for Village Community Centres, Stationery items to all the schools.

While handing over key of Power Tiller to villagers, IG, BSF described “this as a key to prosperity as it will help in improving the agriculture yield.” It is pertinent to mention here that last year also one Power Tiller was given in the same area, however it was given to other village and similarly in future another village will be given the power tiller. IG emphasized  that the villagers having land ahead of border fencing should cultivate their land and assured that BSF will give the security cover and the gate timings will be adjusted as per the convenience of the farmers going ahead of the fence.

Similarly up-gradation of school infrastructure will have lasting results as children are the future of the country. It may be mentioned that Sh Sudesh Kumar, IPS IG has started the system of personally visiting the border areas and interacting with the villagers of bordering areas to ascertain their requirement and as per their requirement, items were selected and distributed. This is the second consecutive year when under the leadership of Shri Sudesh Kumar, IPS, IG BSF, Meghalaya Ftr, the Power tillers and other items, which will have the lasting impact on the lives of the border villagers, were handed over to the villagers of the border villages.

It has always been the endeavour of Border Security Force to help the border population and enable them to lead a prosperous life. Following the trend, this year also BSF is organizing the Civic Action Programme for the under-privileged border population residing in far-flung areas. It may be mentioned that this year also BSF is spending Rs. 50 Lakhs in the State of Meghalaya, for uplifting the economic activities, cultivation, education, health, and various other facilities in the border areas.

Speaking on the occasion, the Chief guest Shri Sudesh Kumar, IPS in his address to the gathering, welcomed all the headman/ secretaries and other villagers and informed that BSF is deployed on border for security of people and to promote safe, secure and prosperous border. IG told that the initiatives taken last year by BSF under his leadership have shown positive results and expected that it will further improve the strong bonding between the border guards and the border population.  He also told that BSF will be starting the vocational training for the border population in collaboration with the Government of Meghalaya. This will definitely give more opportunities for the border population to improve their economic condition.

He also asked border population to come forward with more and more valuable ideas which can be implemented for better border management and also for improving the living standard of border population. He urged border population to share information about any stranger/unknown person visiting their villages and smugglers, militants etc. IG emphatically said that smugglers bring FICN, which destabilizes the economy and ultimately impact adversely on the  life. He also mentioned about the GNLA and the ANVC (B) cadres operating in the area and the extortion activities and further seeked the cooperation of the border population in curbing their activities.

On the occasion, a medical camp was also organised by the BSF at vill Gumaghat in distt South West Khasi Hills, in which free medical check-up and medicines worth Rs 50,000/- were distributed to about 400 people of bordering areas by the Senior medical officers of BSF. A colourful cultural programme was also presented by the children of the local School and children of other bordering schools. All the headmen’s/ secretaries and villagers appreciated the contribution made by the BSF in securing the border and in helping border populations to improve their life. (SP News)
