The DC East Khasi Hills released “Mobile Refraction Van” run by Bansara Eye Care Centre

Shillong, May 26: We at Bansara Eye Care Centre have always strived to reach out to people from remote areas that are deprived of eye care service. In our endeavour towards achieving it, we have collaborated with Vision for Life, Essilor on developing and launching a novel project for the state of Meghalaya to tackle the problem of uncorrected refractive error.

Globally 2.5 Billion people are affected by vision problems and India alone has 55 crore people suffering from the problem. Bansara Eye Care Hospital through its charitable unit “Society for Promotion of Eye Care and Sight” is launching a first of its kind Project “The Mobile Refraction Van” in collaboration with “Vision for Life – Essilor” where our aim is to help reduce avoidable blindness caused due to uncorrected refractive error in the state of Meghalaya as mentioned during the welcome address given by Dr. Jennifer V. Basaiawmoit, Medical Director, Bansara Eye Care Centre.

“Our target would be to screen approximately 1,10,000 people free of cost in 5 years by conducting 720 quality refraction eye camps across different districts of the state and provide high quality – low cost Essilor lenses and frames to approximately 40,000 patients.” mentioned Mrs. Roshna Gajmer Basaiawmoit, Head Projects and General Administration during the project address.

This would be made possible by our dedicated and trained manpower coupled with state-of-the-art equipment fitted in the “Mobile Refraction Van” or “Spectacles on Wheels” that would help screen, diagnose and eventually dispense spectacles there and then for the patients who need it. The mobile van would travel around to various markets in the state organizing refraction eye camps that would deliver quality eye care services to the people who need it thereby improving awareness, invoking health seeking behaviour and also dispensing high quality spectacles to the patients who need it at affordable costs.

The intention behind the launch of this Mobile Project is to bolster our effort to help and provide access to quality eye care services to patients residing in this part of this region and ensure affordability for the same.

The Deputy Commissioner of the region (East Khasi Hills) – Shri. P.S. Dkhar was the Chief Guest for the Function alongside Joint Director Health Services (East Khasi Hills) – Dr.Aman Warr who was the Guest of Honor for the event. 2.5 NVG Essilor India’s Country Head Mr. Milind Jhadhav presented the key for the Mobile Refraction Van during the inaugural launch of the Vehicle.

With this Project, Bansara Eye Care Centre through the support from Vision for Life – Essilor is furthering its mission to eliminate avoidable blindness in the state of Meghalaya through cooperation, collaboration and convergence, thus, making eye care service easily accessible, affordable and available to the people in dire need.

The team at Bansara Eye Care Centre extends its heartiest thanks to the local community, press and support that the district authority has given to make this possible and eventually make Meghalaya an Avoidable Blindness Free State.
