Three over ground workers of GNLA were arrested by the police in Assam

Tura, July 28: Three over ground workers of Garo National Liberation Army (GNLA) are being questioned in Assam’s Dhubri by police for alleged complaints against the trio of serving demand notes in Mancachar and its adjoining areas.

They were arrested yesterday evening from Kakripara, under Mancachar police station in Dhubri district by Assam police.

The over ground workers have been identified as – Dulal Miah, 30, a resident of Mancachar, Biswajit Koch, 20 and Aldrin Sangma, 22, both from Purakashia area of South West Garo Hills.

Superintendent of police, Dhubri Mridulananda Sharma said, “They were actively involved in serving demand notes, which was monitored by our team in Mancachar. They have been unleashing terror in the name of GNLA making calls to traders in Mancachar and other areas. Interrogation is on”.

Police say that they were tracked based on numerous phone calls they made in the last one week to traders.

In the last two months, insurgency activities have increased along Assam-Meghalaya border villages in Garo hills, Dhubri and South Salmara area. At least 18 traders have been abducted, of which bodies of two have been recovered.

Last week, two labourers from Mancachar area – Saheed Miah and Sohidur Islam were killed in the outskirt of Tura. In connection with this, Meghalaya police on Saturday evening arrested 24 cadres of the breakaway faction of A’chik National Volunteer’s Council (ANVC-B).

Police say that they have concrete evidence against few cadres of the outfit.

Of the 24 arrested cadres, six of them were yesterday sent on five day police custody and the rest on a 14 day judicial custody.

Superintendent of police, West Garo Hills, Mukesh Singh said, “We have interrogated six senior cadres for their involvement and the investigation is on”.

The brutal murder of Miah and Islam has created a widespread repercussion with public and civil bodies in Mancachar raising their anger against rising insurgency in Garo hills.

District administration officials from Dhubri and West Garo Hills district on Saturday held a consultation meeting with several NGOs assuring safety and security to the traders and others, who frequent Garo hills.

In the meeting it was agreed that a next meeting will be held with NGO representatives, religious organisation from Garo hills and Dhubri in presence of deputy commissioners from both the district.

The civil bodies from Mancachar area has also sought for President’s rule in Meghalaya and immediate release of compensation for the deceased families. (SP News)
