Trucks from Assam stopped plying on NH 62 and 37, demand CBI prove

Shillong, Feb 18: Demanding action from Meghalaya and Assam governments to check the illegal collection in the toll gates on the National Highway 62 and 37, the coal truckers from Assam have decided to call an “indefinite-bandh.”

The indefinite economic blockade was called by Trckers under the banner of the Goalpara District Truck Owners’ Association (GDTOA). This bandh started from Monday last. The association has also  threatened to stage an indefinite-block against the movement of the vehicles carrying diesel, petrol, kerosene and gas cylinder from February 24 if their demands are not met.

GDTOA president Abul Kalam Hussain told reporters, “We have decided to call for an indefinite bandh on coal carrying vehicles on the NH 62 and 37 connecting Shallang in West Khasi Hills – Hahim via Boko NH, to protest the illegal collection of money from coal truckers and traders by illegal,  unauthorized toll gates set up along the two national highways connecting both Assam and Meghalaya.”

The association has also submitted memorandums to Assam as well as Meghalaya Government, however, following the failure of the district administrations (North Garo Hills, South Garo Hills and West Garo hills) and Assam to check this problem, the association has decided to go ahead with their bandh.

Threating to take up the issue with centre if the problem is not solve the association also demanded CBI prove.(SP News)
