“NEIGRIHMS performs first in East India“Bo-Yang Y-Incision aortic annular enlargement surgery”

Shillong, Nov 06: The Department of Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgery(CTVS) at NEIGRIHMS has performed East India’s first Bo-Yang Y-Incision Aortic Annular Enlargement Surgery.

Developed in 2021 by Prof.Bo Yang from the University of Michigan Health, this procedure addresses challenges in aortic valve replacement, especially for patients with severe aortic valve disease.

Recent research has shown that traditional aortic valve replacements are often undersized by 5-7 mm, reducing the valve opening by up to 40- 60% accelerating wear and deterioration.

This procedure allows for aortic root expansion, enabling the implantation of a 3-5 sizes larger valve improving blood flow, valve durability, and patient survival outcomes.

The surgery was performed by Dr.ReubenL.Kynta, AssociateProfessor of CTVS,with assistance from Dr.Tabang Nyitan and Dr.Neelmajingbha Sun (AssistantProfessors of CTVS),and Dr. Priyanka Dev (Associate Professor, Anesthesiology).

Extracorporeal Perfusion support was provided by PerfusionistsMr.MrinalMandal andLoosarDkhar, alongside the skilled CTVS-OTandCTVS-ICUstaff.

Director, NEIGRIHMS, Prof. Nalin Mehta lauded the achievement as this technique gives the patient an artificial valve with an inner diameter of the opening of the cusps similar to or larger than the native ring, avoiding under sizing that occurs when relying on the inner diameter of the metal frame reported by valve companies. He emphasized that this accomplishment reinforces NEIGRIHMS’ commitment to advancing cardiac surgical care in the region.
