Shillong Jan 24: One advocacy workshop on environmental matters organised by National Green Tribunal in collaboration with Forest and Environment department held at Yojna Bhawan Shillong.
The workshop was attended by the members of civil societies, NGOs, Government officials apart from the officials of Forest department officials.
Justice MS Nambiar , Judicial member National Green Tribunal and Ranjan Chetterjee, Expert member National Green tribunal were present on the occasion.
During the workshop, Ranjan Chetterjee, Expert member National Green tribunal had a wide presentation on the formation, objectives and the working of National green tribunal.
The participants asked a series of question and quarries during the interaction that held at the end of the session.
The query specially related to the functioning of cement factories in Jaintia Hills, Forest amendment bill, sand mining and coal mining were some of the major highlighted issues.
The National Green Tribunal has been established on 18.10.2010 under the National Green Tribunal Act 2010 for effective and expeditious disposal of cases relating to environmental protection and conservation of forests and other natural resources including enforcement of any legal right relating to environment and giving relief and compensation for damages to persons and property and for matters connected therewith or incidental thereto.
It is a specialized body equipped with the necessary expertise to handle environmental disputes involving multi-disciplinary issues. The Tribunal’s dedicated jurisdiction in environmental matters shall provide speedy environmental justice and help reduce the burden of litigation in the higher courts.(SP News)
