Stop Diarrhoea campaign 2026 launched in South West Garo Hills District

Ampati, June 19: The Stop Diarrhoea Campaign (SDC) 2026 was successfully launched on Thursday at Balalgre LP School, South West Garo Hills, under the National Health Mission (NHM), Meghalaya. The campaign was formally inaugurated by Shri D. B. G. Momin, Additional Deputy Commissioner, South West Garo Hills, in the presence of district health officials, health workers, community leaders, teachers, students, and local residents.

The campaign aims to raise awareness on the prevention and management of diarrhoeal diseases, particularly among children, through community participation, improved hygiene practices, and timely healthcare interventions.

Addressing the gathering, Shri D. B. G. Momin appreciated the efforts of the Health Department in organizing the campaign and emphasized the importance of collective community action in promoting healthy practices and preventing diarrhoeal diseases. He stressed that awareness and preventive measures are essential to safeguard the health of children and vulnerable populations.

Speaking during the programme, Dr. Noreen Sangma, District Maternal and Child Health Officer (DMCHO), highlighted the importance of maintaining personal hygiene and consuming boiled and safe drinking water to prevent diarrhoeal diseases.

She also underscored the need for regular handwashing with soap, proper sanitation, safe food handling practices, and the timely use of Oral Rehydration Solution (ORS) and Zinc tablets for effective diarrhoea management.

Prior to the launch programme, a free health screening camp was organized for the local community. A total of 147 beneficiaries availed the services, including 100 adults, 28 elderly persons, and 19 children.

The camp provided a range of healthcare services such as general health check-ups, eye screening, dental screening, Non-Communicable Disease (NCD) screening, cancer screening, HIV screening, and distribution of essential medicines. Aadhaar and MHIS linkage services were also facilitated for beneficiaries.

The programme further featured awareness sessions and demonstrations on proper handwashing techniques to encourage healthy behaviour among school children and community members.

The event witnessed enthusiastic participation from the public and concluded successfully with a collective commitment to improving community health and reducing the burden of diarrhoeal diseases in the district.
