Shillong, Naitung 29: The National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT), Shillong, today commenced its three-day Orientation Programme, welcoming the new batch of students from across the country as they begin their academic journey at one of India’s premier institutions for design, management and technology.
The inaugural ceremony marked the beginning of a new chapter for students representing diverse cultures, languages and regions of India. The Orientation Programme has been designed to familiarise the newly admitted students with NIFT’s academic ecosystem, creative learning environment, institutional values and the opportunities available to them as they prepare for careers in the design and creative industries.
The inaugural session was graced by Shri Anil Kariwala, Founder & CEO, Kariwala Industries Ltd., as the Chief Guest, and Dr Ravi Shankar Bhakat, Faculty of Marketing, Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Shillong, as the Guest of Honour.
In his address, Shri Anil Kariwala encouraged students to look beyond the classroom and prepare themselves for the evolving requirements of the global fashion and textile industry.
Drawing upon his experience in leading a diversified enterprise committed to ethical manufacturing, sustainability and consistent quality, he emphasised the importance of combining creativity with technical competence, adaptability, professionalism and a strong work ethic.
He urged the students to remain curious, embrace emerging technologies, understand market dynamics and continuously upgrade their skills to remain relevant in an increasingly competitive industry.
Shri Kariwala also encouraged the students to remain true to themselves while pursuing excellence in their chosen fields. Highlighting the importance of innovation, sustainability and collaboration, he urged them to think globally while remaining rooted in India’s rich cultural heritage. He emphasised that creative work begins with a deeper understanding of people, purpose and responsibility.
Dr Ravi Shankar Bhakat urged the students to recognise that the future of design extends far beyond aesthetics. He highlighted the evolving role of designers as innovators, problem-solvers, entrepreneurs and leaders who can influence industries, shape consumer behaviour and contribute to sustainable development.
Welcoming the students, Dr Brijesh Deore, Director, NIFT Shillong, congratulated the newly admitted batch for securing admission to one of the country’s premier institutions. He encouraged the students to approach their education with discipline, creativity, resilience and an open mind.
He emphasised that design can serve as a powerful catalyst for innovation, cultural preservation, sustainability and positive social transformation. He urged the students to make full use of the institute’s academic resources, industry collaborations and multidisciplinary learning environment while developing into responsible and ethical professionals.
The first day of the Orientation Programme also introduced the students to NIFT Shillong’s academic structure, interdisciplinary curriculum, student support systems, campus facilities and institutional values.
