Shillong, Sept 29: The MIT School of Nursing, MIT University of Meghalaya, held the Lamp Lighting and Oath-Taking Ceremony for its 2nd Batch of General Nursing and Midwifery (GNM) students on 29 September 2026 on the University campus.
Held under the theme “Illuminating Humanity: The Beginning of a Lifelong Commitment to Care,” the ceremony marked an important milestone in the students’ journey into the nursing profession, symbolising the beginning of a career rooted in knowledge, compassion, responsibility and service to humanity.
The lighting of the lamp was a significant part of the ceremony, representing the light of knowledge, hope and compassion that nurses carry into their professional lives. As the students lit their lamps, the moment reflected their commitment to a profession centred on caring for people and serving them with dignity and respect.
The Oath-Taking Ceremony followed, with the students solemnly pledging to uphold the values and responsibilities of the nursing profession. The oath reaffirmed their commitment to providing ethical, competent and compassionate care and to serving patients, families and communities with integrity and dedication.
Addressing the gathering, Dr. Debmalya Bhattacharya, Pro Vice Chancellor & Registrar, MIT University of Meghalaya, spoke to the students about the responsibility that comes with entering the healthcare profession. He encouraged them to approach their careers with humility, discipline and a strong sense of purpose, while continuously working towards excellence in patient care.
He also emphasized that nursing extends well beyond clinical knowledge and technical skills. It requires empathy, patience, courage and a genuine commitment to the wellbeing of others. The students were encouraged to remain lifelong learners and to continuously develop themselves both professionally and personally as they progress in their careers.
The ceremony brought together the leadership of the MIT School of Nursing, including Smti. Malynda Marbaniang, Principal, MIT School of Nursing, and Smti. Elgina Darilang Shabong, Vice Principal, MIT School of Nursing, along with Deans and Heads of various Schools of the University, faculty members, staff, students, parents, guardians and invited guests.
The occasion provided an opportunity for the students, their families and the University community to celebrate an important step in their professional journey. For the 2nd Batch GNM students, the ceremony served as a reminder that nursing is not simply a profession to be learned, but a commitment to care for others with compassion, dignity and humanity.
With the lighting of the lamps and the taking of the oath, the students formally embarked on the next chapter of their journey towards becoming responsible and compassionate healthcare professionals.
