Congress paid Rs 50 lakh for using Pawan Han helicopter for elelction campaign in Garo Hills

Tura, April 3: Pawan Hans Limited today clarified on the allegation levelled by National People’s Party on the misuse of the helicopter service by Meghalaya chief minister, Mukul Sangma.

General Manager of Pawan Hans Limited, Sanjay Kumar in his letter to the returning officer, Pravin Bakshi said, “The Dauphin N3 helicopter was provided to Meghalaya Congress committee for carrying their passenger to different location as per their requirement after payment received”.

The National People’s Party had lodged the complaint with the election commission against chief minister, Mukul Sangma for the misuse of public transport chopper service for carrying out campaign for Congress candidate Daryl William Momin, which they said was violation of model code of conduct.

The helicopter was used during March 25 to April 1 by the chief minister, Mukul Sangma.

Kumar said that the helicopter was provided to Meghalaya Congress committee after receiving no objection certificate (NOC) for de-hiring from Meghalaya Transport Corporation.

Meghalaya Transport Corporation in its letter to the returning officer for Tura parliamentary seat said, “Government of Meghalaya had issued an NOC to Pawan Hans for de-hiring of the government helicopter service. It is the sole concern of Pawan Hans to utilize the helicopter after it is being de-hired, on the condition that no fixed monthly charges will be charged during the de-hired period”.

“Using the only Pawan Hans helicopter, which is deployed for public transport by state government and being managed by Meghalaya Transport Corporation, solely for election purposes to ferry the chief minister to different meeting venues in Garo hills districts amounts to abuse of power and misuse of government facilities for election campaign,” said NPP’s West Garo Hills district president, Semford B Sangma in his complaint with the returning officer, Pravin Bakshi.

Semford submitted a copy of the receipt and the helicopter itinerary to the returning officer in Tura in which the Congress has paid Rs 50 lakh for use of the chopper on two days – March 25 and 26.
