Shillong, Sept 02: The Department of Ophthalmology NEIGRIHMS, organised a Continued Medical Education (CME) program at Vivanta, Shillong on Friday the 29th August, 2025. The academic event was organized with the objective of updating the Eye specialists of Meghalayaabout the latest developments in the field of Ophthalmology.
The CME, “Updates in Ophthalmology”, brought together many ophthalmologists – resident doctors, postgraduate students, and also optometrists from Shillong, Nongpoh, and nearby regions.Prof. (Dr.) Tanie Natung, Head, Department of Ophthalmology, NEIGRIHMS led the academic session and encouraged resident doctors, post graduate students and delegates to make full use of the academic insights and underscored the importance of staying abreast with evolving practices to ensure optimal patient care, and also emphasized the value of sharing knowledge and surgical skills for the benefit of patients across the region from these advancements.
The CME featured insightful talks and interesting case presentations by leading ophthalmologists from the region, highlighting modern surgical techniques for the treatment of strabismus and cataract and also focused on recent advancements in ophthalmic drugs and delivery systems.
Key speakers included Prof. (Dr.) Tanie Natung from NEIGRIHMS, Dr. Batriti Wallang and Dr. Wakaru Shullai from Mehra-Ki Eyecare, and Dr. Hiranmoyee Das fromNazareth Hospital.
Doctorsfrom Civil HospitalShillong and Nongpoh, Bansara Eye Care, Army and Assam Rifles hospital,and private practitioners of the region attended the CME. Participants engaged actively in case-based discussions and shared their knowledge.
Prof. (Dr.) Nalin Mehta, Director, NEIGRIHMS who graced the occasion as the Chief Guest, lauded the department of Ophthalmologyfor its initiative. Prof. Mehta also urged all the participants to pursue lifelong learning in the dynamic field of eye care.
Noting the department’s ability to take a leadership role in this area Prof. Mehta offered the expertise of NEIGRIHMSto support capacity building program for theeye care professionals in the region. The event concluded with a vote of thanks by Dr. Benjamin Nongrum, Additional Professor of Ophthalmology, NEIGRIHMS.
