Ampati, Sept 17: For a family in the remote villages of South West Garo Hills, a visit from a health team became an opportunity to turn hesitation into protection.
When the health team from Mahendraganj Community Health Centre (CHC) reached Ghugrakandi, Kukurmua and Tungrurchar on Wednesdayy, one of the key concerns was an immunisation-refusal child.
Rather than leaving the matter at the doorstep, the team took time to speak with the family, listen to their concerns and explain why timely vaccination remains essential for a child’s health and protection against vaccine-preventable diseases.
The visit, led by Dr. Noor Ain Khan, MS cum Sr. M&HO, I/C Mahendraganj CHC and I/C MCH, Mahendraganj, was part of an outreach effort aimed at ensuring that healthcare reaches families who may otherwise face difficulties in accessing services.
The team also attended to a high risk Pregnant Woman, providing counselling on the importance of antenatal care, regular monitoring and timely access to institutional healthcare.
The outreach did not end with counselling. Two mothers were brought to Mahendraganj CHC through the CMSMS ambulance service, where their child was vaccinated at the health facility. The intervention demonstrated how coordinated field-level outreach and transport support can help bridge the gap between families in remote communities and essential health services.
For the health workers, the exercise was not merely about administering a vaccine. It was about building confidence, answering questions and ensuring that families understand the importance of seeking timely care.
Such doorstep interventions are particularly significant in rural and hard-to reach areas, where distance, hesitation and lack of awareness can sometimes become barriers to accessing healthcare. By meeting families in their own communities and connecting them with appropriate services, frontline health workers continue to play an important role in strengthening immunisation and maternal healthcare at the grassroots level.
