Shillong, Oct 23: The Hynñiewtrep Youths’ Council (HYC) has submitted a representation to the Director of the North Eastern Indira Gandhi Regional Institute of Health and Medical Sciences (NEIGRIHMS), Shillong, urging the introduction of a dedicated State-wise quota for eligible students of Meghalaya in the B.Sc. Nursing Course.
The Council expressed serious concern that the provisional admission list for the 2026-2027 academic session, notified on 7 September 2026, comprises 48 candidates, with no student from Meghalaya appearing to have secured admission.
HYC stated that while it respects the national character of NEIGRIHMS and the principle of merit-based admission, students of Meghalaya must be given a fair and meaningful opportunity to access professional nursing education at this premier Central Government institution located in their own State.
The Council has urged NEIGRIHMS to consider a seat-allocation system on the lines of the Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS), Imphal, and the applicable reservation framework for Meghalaya students in MBBS admissions at NEIGRIHMS.
HYC has specifically requested that the matter be placed before the Governing Council meeting scheduled for 27 October 2026, with a view to introaueng a State-wise quota and making the necessary amendments to the existing rules.
The Council believes that such a measure would improve access to professional education for local students and contribute to the development of skilled healthcare personnel in Meghalaya.
HYC hopes that NEIGRIHMS and the concerned authorities will give the matter due consideration and take appropriate steps to ensure that deserving students of Meghalaya are not left without a meaningful opportunity to pursue professional nursing education in their own State.
