Shillong, May 12: The Department of Labour, Employment & Skill Development, Government of Meghalaya, through the Meghalaya State Skills Development Society (MSSDS), will organise Skillerate 2026 at the North-Eastern Hill University (NEHU), Shillong on May 13, 2026. The programme will witness the participation of young people with aspirations of contributing to the State’s growing skilling, employment and entrepreneurship ecosystem.
The event will be graced by Shri Conrad K. Sangma, Hon’ble Chief Minister, Government of Meghalaya, and Shri Methodius Dkhar, Hon’ble Minister in-charge of the Department of Labour, Employment & Skill Development, Government of Meghalaya.
With nearly 74 per cent of Meghalaya’s population below the age of 35 years, the State government has been placing strong emphasis on youth empowerment through skill development, employment generation and entrepreneurship promotion. Under the leadership of Shri Conrad K. Sangma, Hon’ble Chief Minister, several flagship initiatives have been launched to equip the youth with industry-relevant skills and livelihood opportunities.
Under Skills Meghalaya, 60,000 individuals have been trained. Of these, more than 2,800 have been placed in jobs, while over 10,300 have moved into self-employment. A network of 716 training providers and 35 career advisors operates across all 11 districts, contributing to over 12,900 jobs created through training-linked interventions.
Furthermore, launched in 2025, the Chief Minister’s Skilling Mission has already trained 30,000 youth, with a target of training 70,000 more by 2028.
The State is also linking local talent to global opportunities. Under the Overseas Placement Initiative, 66 nurses have been placed abroad, with 37 currently sending remittances of around ₹80,000/month each.
During Skillerate 2026, the Government will launch several new initiatives aimed at strengthening the State’s skilling ecosystem. These include PROPEL – a post-training support initiative, MEGASKILL – a global skill competition pathway, SHIELD – focused on training, certification, placement and welfare support, and EQUIP – an inclusive skilling initiative for vulnerable groups. Work orders under Skills Meghalaya & Supporting Human Capital Development in Meghalaya, along with Startup Tools, will also be distributed during the programme.
The government stated that the various skilling programmes reflect Meghalaya’s growing national and international footprint in skill development and employment generation. The State government remains committed to creating an enabling environment for the youth through skill-based mobility, entrepreneurship and sustainable livelihood opportunities.
