Shillong, June 22: The 12th International Day of Yoga, under the theme “Yoga for Healthy Ageing”, organized by the University Level Committee was celebrated by the North-Eastern Hill University, Shillong, in collaboration with the National Service Scheme (NSS) on 21st June 2026 at the Multi-Use Convention Hall, NEHU Campus.
Prof. S. Umdor, Pro-Vice Chancellor, NEHU, Shillong graced the occasion as the Chief Guest of the programme. The programme was also attended by faculty members, non-teaching staff, students, and their family members.
The event began with the felicitation of Prof. S. Umdor, Chief Guest and Dr. (Ms.) Anamika Upadhaya, Art of Living Foundation, Shillong Centre, Resource Person by Prof. D.K. Choubey, Chairman, University Level Yoga Committee (ULYC). This was followed by the traditional lighting of the Lamp by the dignitaries in the presence of the members of ULYC and participants.
Prof. D.K. Choubey, Chairman (ULYC), extended a warm welcome to the dignitaries, invitees and all the participants. During the introduction of the theme of the International Day of Yoga 2026, he highlighted the importance of practising Yoga regularly, especially among students, to reduce stress and anxiety.
On this special day, he emphasized that Yoga unites the mind, body, and soul and is beneficial for people of all age groups. Lastly, he emphasized that the motto of this year’s celebration, “Yoga for Healthy Ageing”, aims to promote the practice of Yoga by every individual and society at large for a healthy living especially for the elderly.
Dr.(Ms.) Anamika Upadhaya, Art of Living Foundation, Shillong Centre and her team conducted a practical session on the Common Yoga Protocols, which included basic Yoga Poses (Asanas), Breathe Control (Pranayama) techniques and Meditation Techniques which saw an enthralling experience from amongst the more than 200 participants present.
While addressing the gathering, Prof. S. Umdor, Pro-Vice Chancellor, NEHU, Shillong welcomed the dignitaries, invitees and participants. He expressed delight at the large turnout of students inspite of the weather and being a Sunday and a holiday.
He encouraged everyone, especially the youth and elderly, to adopt Yoga in their daily lives for physical and mental well-being. He wishes that such a programme in the coming years will find more participation from across the University fraternity and especially among the young students of the University.
While addressing on the value together with the benefits of Yoga, he urged upon the participants and especially the elderly to adapt Yoga in their daily lives to reap the goodness it offers for the wellness of individuals.
The programme concluded with a vote of thanks proposed by Mr. Prince Raj, NSS Volunteer, NEHU, to all those involved which had made the celebration of the 12th International Day of Yoga 2026 a grand success.
