Ampati, Sept 26: A bite from an infected animal can become fatal if rabies is not prevented in time, and schools in South West Garo Hills are being brought into the district’s awareness efforts to drive home that message among young people and their families.
The District Health Society, South West Garo Hills, in collaboration with the District Veterinary Office, Ampati, will organise a series of student activities on September 28 to mark World Rabies Day 2026.
Poster making, slogan writing and a 200-word essay competition will be held from 9:30 AM at the Vocational Training Centre of the Animal Husbandry & Veterinary Department, Ampati.
Six students each from St. Claret Higher Secondary School, Ampati Government Higher Secondary School, Mother Union Higher Secondary School, Birin Nuchong Secondary School and Spring Field Higher Secondary School have been invited to participate.
Held under the theme “Stronger Together,” the programme will highlight the One Health approach, recognising that preventing rabies requires coordinated action across human health, animal health and the wider community.
The awareness drive will focus on key prevention messages, including responsible pet ownership, vaccination of animals and the need to seek timely post-exposure prophylaxis following potential exposure.
By taking the message into schools, the programme seeks to equip students to become informed messengers of rabies prevention within their families and communities.
