Ampati, June 5: A plantation programme was organised at Asnagre in South West Garo Hills on Friday as part of the observance of World Environment Day 2026 under the MegARISE Project – Protection of Vulnerable Catchment Areas in Meghalaya, supported by KfW Development Bank.
The programme brought together government officials, community members, village representatives and project stakeholders to promote environmental conservation, enhance green cover and raise awareness on the importance of protecting vulnerable catchment areas for sustainable water resource management and ecological balance.
Addressing the gathering, South West Garo Hills Deputy Commissioner, Kumari Anendya Raajshree, IAS, highlighted the significance of World Environment Day as a global platform for collective action towards environmental protection.
She stressed that afforestation and ecosystem restoration play a crucial role in safeguarding natural resources and ensuring sustainable livelihoods for future generations.
The Deputy Commissioner urged citizens to make environmental conservation a year round commitment rather than limiting observance to a single day. As part of the programme, she planted a cocoa sapling, symbolising the district’s commitment to ecological restoration and sustainable development.
Participants also planted a variety of indigenous and environmentally suitable tree species, contributing to ongoing efforts under the MegARISE Project to restore degraded landscapes and strengthen catchment protection measures across Meghalaya.
The programme concluded with a call for greater community participation in environmental conservation initiatives and the adoption of sustainable practices to preserve the region’s rich natural heritage and enhance resilience to climate change.
World Environment Day is observed annually on June 5 to encourage awareness and action for the protection of the environment, reminding governments, communities and individuals of their shared responsibility in addressing environmental challenges.
As part of the observance of World Environment Day 2026, a tree plantation drive was launched in Ghilajuri and Merengkipara villages under Zikzak C&RD Block.
The initiative was undertaken under the MBDA-supported MegLIFE Project with assistance from JICA, reinforcing ongoing efforts toward environmental conservation and sustainable development in the region.
The plantation drive also formed part of the Government of Meghalaya’s ambitious initiative to plant one million trees across the state, spearheaded by the Planning, Investment Promotion and Sustainable Development Department.
The programme aimed to enhance green cover, restore ecological balance, and promote community participation in environmental stewardship.
Officials, community members, village leaders, and project stakeholders actively participated in the plantation activities, demonstrating a collective commitment to protecting natural resources and combating the impacts of climate change.
Speaking on the occasion, participants emphasized the importance of tree planting in preserving biodiversity, improving environmental health, and securing a greener future for coming generations.
The programme concluded with a call for continued community involvement in conservation initiatives and sustainable land management practices.
