Chennai, March 19: The Congress High Command dispatching a high level delegation to meet the DMK patriarch, M. Karunanidhi, but DMK has decided to pull out from the UPA II Government over the watered down US sponsored UN Resolution on Sri Lanka Govt handling of the Tamil issue. As one who has heard testimonies from Sri Lankan Tamils way back in 1984 and subsequently visited Colombo in 2001, the DMK may be right in demanding a strongly worded resolution by the Indian Parliament on the issue. After all, blood is thicker than water. Apparently, the Congress-led UPA does not want to let down its strategic ally, the US and enter into confrontation with Sri Lanka as already, India’s western neighbour, Pakistan, continues to ridicule, mock and aggravate India, the latest being on the hanging of Afzal Guru. Further, India is not in good books with its south western neighbour, the Maldives. Bangladesh Opposition too is not charmed by India.
The UPA Foreign Policy is in shambles. If only, it did not go overboard to bring in domestic policies favouring US nuclear industries, US transnational retailers, meet World Bank & IMF conditionalities at the expense of the majority voiceless Indians.
As it is, UPA II does not have the numbers – only 249 and with the DMK pulling out and SP demanding Beni Prasad Verma’s resignation as Union Minister, what kind of rabbit will it pull out from the UPA hat ? Or are we to participate in early Lok Sabha polls ?
While on the subject of elections, EVM is not trusted and it has been proven so though Meghalaya’s CEO would like to think otherwise. It’s quite simple. If humans, who are supposed to have been created by God can make mistakes, be gullible as well as shrewd, can EVMs, which are human made, be infallible, fool-proof and cannot be manipulated ? Mysterious isn’t it when India is so fascinated with US & Japan, it doesn’t want to revert to manual voting as is practiced in US, Japan and many other ‘developed’ countries.
HSPDP, UDP, CSWO, Subramaniam Swamy of the the Janata Party and many political parties have been demanding to do away with EVM and resort once again to manual voting, but why is the Election Commission of India fighting shy and so adamant with EVM as the only means for exercising one’s franchise. And further, not such a long gap between voting and counting as it was so scheduled in the 2009 Lok Sabha elections. And this will be another story to be shared when Lok Sabha polls is announced sooner or later.(SP News)
