The Speaker disallowed the adjournment motion on border dispute with Assam

Shillong, April 08: The Meghalaya Legislative Assembly on Monday witnessed noisy scenes after the Speaker AT Mandal disallowed the adjournment motion move by the HSPDP Legislator Mr  Ardent Basiawmoit, on the issued of  encroachment by Assam in Meghalaya borders from time to time.

When the speakerdisallowed his adjournment motion, Basaiawmoit said that this show the indifferent attitude of the state Government towards the plight that faces by the people living  along the inter-State border.

The HSPDP MLA said that “We cannot continue to mear spectators to the atrocities and harassment inflected by the government of the Assam” said Mr Ardent.

Mr Ardent said that  Assam is violating the agreement which had been agreed upon by the two States, the agreement is binding only for Meghalaya not for Assam.

In the agreement, said that if any developmental works are to be taken along the inter-State border, it is the duty of the concern  State Government to inform its counterparts. The Assam government is taking development project without informing the government of Meghalaya. NPP legislator James K Sangma who support the demand of the HSPDP legislator.

The Chief Minister however sought for the details of the families who are being prevented to construction of the dwelling houses at Langpih.

“Unless, we have specific details it would be impossible for the Government to take the issue with its counterparts,” he said.

In response to this statement of Chief Minister, HSPDP legislator from Rambrai-Jyrngam assured the Chief Minister that he would provide the details of the families who were prevented to construct their dwelling houses within this week.

Meanwhile, Dr Sangma said that as per the agreement, fresh settlement in areas of dispute should not be encouraged on both the sides.

Later, UDP legislator Paul Lyngdoh took the issue of alleged destruction of the road by the Assam police at Jatalong, Ri-Bhoi district along inter-State border.

In reply, Chief Minister said that as per the report, some unidentified miscreants had came to destroyed the approach road.

Dr Sangma refused to confirm if the Assam police was involved in the incident.

The Chief Minister further said that the matter has been taken up with the Government of Assam to prevent such demolition or destruction of Governmental infrastructures in area of difference.

During question hours  Food and Civil Supplies Minister Clement Marak in his reply to the question  put by the UDP Lehislator from Shillong West Mr Paul Lyngdoh, the minister said that the state government has sent the proposal to the central government for computerizing the supply department and the tatol cost is Rs 43 Cores.
