Shillong, March 6: As drunken driving has always been the cause of frequent road accident in the city, the Shillong Traffic Police (STP)will now introduce a hand-held breath alcohol analyser KT 4000P to check drunken drivers.
Informing reporters about the analyser, East Khasi Hills district, Superintendent of Police (SP), M Kharkhrang said, “Hand Held Breath Alcohol Analyzer is a world-wide used device which can detect drivers with high blood alcohol content,”
It was also informed that the district has procured two of such device and will be used in two traffic branches of the pine city, one being in Sadar Traffic branch and other in Madanrting Traffic branch on trial basis.
Explaining more on the device and how it will be used on field, Additional Superintendent of Police ASP (Traffic) S Rynjah said any suspect would be asked to blow moderately and continuously into the mouthpiece of the device for more than 3 seconds.
It was also informed that the alcohol analyser will detect whether a person driving a vehicle have exceeded the permissible limit of drinking which should be below 30 mg per 100 ml of blood detected by breath analyser which is as per the section 185 (a) of the Motor Vehicle 1988.
“Any person found of having an alcohol level exceeding 30 mg per 100 ml of blood detected by a breath analyzer will be booked under the MV act,” Kharkrang said.
According to the act, any violation will entail either imprisonment of 6 months or a fine of Rs 2000 or both and for subsequent offence committed within 3 years of the previous offence, can lead to either imprisonment which may extend to 2 years or a fine of Rs 3000 or both. (SP News)
