The Governor of Meghalaya announced financial assistance to  rape victim in SWGH District

Shillong, July 24: The  Governor of Meghalaya, Shri Phagu Chauhan, met with a delegation led by Dr. K.C. Boro, Ex-MLA, and former Minister of Meghalaya, today at Raj Bhavan, Shillong.

 

 

During the meeting Dr. Boro discussed and briefed the Governor about a grave incident involving the sexual assault of two minor tribal girls belonging to the Koch community, which occurred on April 16, 2024, in Ampati, South West Garo Hills District.

Accompanied by members of the Meghalaya Koch Women Welfare Association (MKWWA), Dr. Boro expressed deep concern over the incident and submitted a memorandum to the  Governor.

The victims have demanded compensation of 10 lakh rupees, the maximum amount allowed under the Victim Compensation Scheme 2022. The  Governor attentively listened to their grievances and assured them of his support and commitment to justice for the victims.

In a compassionate gesture, the  Governor announced an immediate financial assistance of 50,000 rupees from his discretionary grant to a victim of this heinous crime. The meeting also addressed broader issues affecting the aggrieved communities of the region.

The Governor emphasized the importance of ensuring the safety and security of all citizens, particularly women and children, and reiterated the need for stringent measures to prevent such incidents in the future. He assured Dr. Boro and the delegation that the matter would be taken up with the relevant authorities for immediate action.
