The Department of Neurology, NEIGRIHMS observed World Alzheimer’s Day

Shillong, Sept 21: The Department of Neurology, NEIGRIHMS, Shillong, organized a poster making competition to raise awareness about Alzheimer’s disease and dementiato commemorate World Alzheimer’s Day on the21st of September.

The theme, “Time to Act on Dementia, Time to Act on Alzheimer’s Disease,” reflects the growing need to address these conditions, that are increasing worldwide.

The competition was held in three categories: Nursing Officers, Interns & Resident Doctors, and OPD Staffofvarious departments. Winners in each category were recognized for their creativity and contribution to spreading awareness.

This initiative showcases NEIGRIHMS Hospital’s dedication to enhancing knowledge in their staff and educate the public on the importance of early diagnosis and intervention in managing dementia and Alzheimer’s disease, and thereby combat the associated stigma.

The prize distribution ceremony, held on September 21st, 2024, featured key messages from several distinguished dignitaries. Prof Dr. S R Sharma, Head of department of Neurology, NEIGRIHMS opened the event by welcoming participants and providing an insightful thought on the theme of Alzheimer’s disease.

Prof.Dr. C. Daniala, Medical Superintendent of NEIGRIHMS focused on the need for early recognition of dementia symptoms and emphasized how timely diagnosis with available investigations can help differentiate Alzheimer’s from other forms of cognitive decline. Prof. (Dr.) A. Santa Singh,

Dean, NEIGRIHMS praised the Neurology Department for organizing such a meaningful event, noting that raising awareness through such initiatives is crucial in addressing the stigma around dementia.

Prof.Dr.Nalin Mehta, Director, NEIGRIHMS, lauded the participants for their creative contributions and highlighted the critical role of caregivers in managing dementia, calling for increased societal support for both patients and their families.

In the absence of a cure for Alzheimer’s disease, he emphasised on the need to educate and train family members of patients with Dementia and Alzheimer’s disease, so that the helpless patients are cared for with dignity and respect.

These messages underscored the hospital’s mission to take proactive action on dementia, urging both medical professionals and the public to become more vigilant and supportive in managing this growing health challenge.
