ACHIK from Garo Hills write to MHA to awards to brave heart for saving lives from drowning

Shillong, Oct 20: The organisation A’chik Conscious Holistically Integrated Krima (ACHIK) has written to the Secretary, Ministry of Home Affairs, Government of India, request for immediate issuance of certificates and medals of Sarvottam Jeevan Raksha Padak to the brave hearts involved in saving lives during a drowning incident in 2022.

The organisation ACHIK writes to the Secretary MHA you on behalf of the survivors, family members, and well-wishers of four brave individuals who exhibited exceptional courage and selflessness during a drowning incident that occurred in 2022.

These individuals went above and beyond the call of duty to save the lives of several passengers, who would have otherwise succumbed to the waters. Their bravery and sacrifice were recognized, and they were duly announced as the recipients of the prestigious Sarvottam Jeevan Raksha Padak in q letter D.O. No. 17/8/2022-Public Dated 30th January , 2023 .

However, it is with great concern and deep disappointment that ACHIK must bring to your attention the undue delay in awarding the certificates and medals to these valiant individuals.

The names of four individuals who have been recognized for Sarvottam Jeevan Raksha Padak are, Shri Sengrik D . Sangma, Shri Nibath D. Sangma,  Shri Wagrik M. Momin, Shri Jinjash D. Marak The Sarvottam Jeevan Raksha Padak is a distinguished civilian honour, awarded to those who risk their lives to save others.

These four individuals have been officially recognized for their brave act, yet the formal recognition through the certificates and medals has not materialized, despite the passage of over two years since the incident.

As per the notification issued in D.O. No. 17/8/2022-Public Dated 30th January, 2023, their names were included in the list of awardees. Their actions have set an example of supreme valour, and the delay in awarding them the certificates and medals sends the wrong message to the public, undermining the values of recognition and encouragement for such acts of bravery .

For individuals who have put their lives on the line for others, timely acknowledgment of their sacrifice is of paramount importance. The delay in bestowing these medals and certificates not only diminishes the significance of the award but also affects the morale of the awardees and their families.

The families of these brave individuals have expressed feelings of neglect and disappointment. For them, the medal and certificate symbolize national validation of their loved ones’ bravery, and the delay has caused unnecessary distress and emotional strain.

Some of the recipients have also expressed frustration over the lack of clarity regarding the timeline of the award ceremony. The uncertainty surrounding the presentation of the medals and certificates has caused significant anxiety among the awardees.

The joy and pride that should accompany the receipt of such an esteemed honour have been overshadowed by this prolonged wait. Moreover, it is important to note that some of the individuals involved in the rescue may have been affected by the trauma of the incident itself.

While they were the saviours in the situation, they were also witnesses to the tragic loss of life. Timely recognition through the Sarvottam Jeevan Raksha Padak would have provided them with a sense of closure and validation of their courageous efforts, helping to alleviate any lingering emotional burdens from the incident.

Given the circumstances, it is essential that the Ministry of Home Affairs takes immediate action to rectify this situation. These individuals have waited for more than two years for their rightful recognition, and further delay would only exacerbate the negative impact on them and theirs.
