Shillong, Jan 28: The Deputy Commissioner, East Khasi Hills District Mr. Sanjay Goyal inaugurated two days training programme on Aquifer Management through Participatory Approach and Local ground Issue held at Enterprise Facifitation Centre, C & RD, BlockMawphlang East Khasi Hills District.
The two day traning was organized by the Central Ground Water Board, North Eastern Region Ministry of Water Resources, Government of India, Guwahati under Rajiv Gandhi National Ground Water Training & Research Institute, Raipur, this programme has been taken up as a nationwide training programme at various levels to develop awareness among the rural people on water conservation and ground water management through public participation.
In his inaugural speech, Mr. Sanjay Goyal said that water is one of the most important natural resources and is essential component of growth and socio –economic development and overall welfare of the masses. Due to population growth and climate change most of the water resources are polluted.
He said About 70 to 80 % of the area in North East did not utilized ground water for agricultural purposes as most of the farmers used rain water as the main source of irrigation. With the use of new technology in irrigation, ground water can be used foragriculture and other purposes.
The Deputy Commissioner $so stated that Ground water is the backbone of IndianAgriculture and of drinking water security. He also encouraged to diversify this kind of project in the rural areas so as to make the people aware about the knowledge on different water resources.
