Shillong, Sept 03: A sharp turnaround saw Sawmer come from a goal down to beat Nangkiew Irat 2-1 in the Shillong Premier League 2026 at the SSA Stadium here today.
Ronaldkydon L Nonglait (38’) scored first for Nangkiew Irat before Sawmer came back through Khrawkupar Tamu (70’) and Andy Mawthoh (75’).
Nangkiew Irat had won their last two games and were looking for a hat-trick of victories. They had a couple of missed chances before scoring a soft goal, with Sawmer goalkeeper Pyrshangbanbha Dkhar yielding rather easily to Ronald’s left-footer.
That happened to be the 50th goal of SPL 2026 and for most of the rest of the match it looked like it would be the only one of the game. However, Sawmer burst to life in the span of a few minutes in the second half.
The equaliser came from a short corner that was crossed to the far post where Khrawkupar was waiting to head it in. Wanshanlang Dkhar went close on two occasions for Sawmer after that and in the 76th minute substitute Andy broke through and tapped in a cross from the left flank.
This was the first time in the last six games that a team has come from behind to win. The result had an effect in the mid-table of the standings, with Sawmer (6 points) moving up to sixth position, which dropped Nongkseh (4 points) down to seventh.
Defeat also resulted in Nangkiew Irat losing fourth place to Meghalaya Police. The two are tied on 7 points each and before today Nangkiew had the better goal difference but that is also now tied at +1 each. MLP have scored more goals, though, (7 to 5) and that gives them fourth position.
The SPL 2026 will now go on a short hiatus and return on 9 September with bottom side Mylliem facing second-placed Shillong Lajong at 3:40pm.
