Shillong, Jan 14: The police of East Khasi Hills arrested one Rishonroy Kharkongor who was allegedly rape a three and half year old girl at Mawlonghat village on Saturday.
Addressing a press conference here on Monday East Khasi hills Superintendent of Police M Kharkhrang informed that Kharkongor who had raped the three and half year old girl has been arrested and remanded to eight days police custody.
Lamenting over the increasing number of rape cases Kharkrang suggested to the people, especially in the rural areas, and to the families where both husband and wife goes to work to start something like a crèche giving two people the responsibility to look after the children when the parents go to work.
According to Kharkhrang the rape cases, especially of minors, are committed against the children of the lower income group- where both the parents have to go to work- and by culprit known to the child and family.
Meanwhile, Kharkrang also informed that Shockingly of the forty-eight rape cases that were reported in 2012, twenty-four of the rape victims were minor.
However, lamenting over the rise in crime against women like rape which cannot be police alone, Kharkrang said that people can play an active role to stop the crime.
