Shillong, Sept 30: The street food vendors training programme, inaugurated in Shillong on 17th September 2019, an initiative of the Commissionerate of Food Safety, Meghalaya and proactively supported by Nestle India Ltd. and National Association of Street Vendor of India (NASVI) is the first-of-its kind programme to be organised to train street food vendors in the state of Meghalaya.
The main objective of the training programme held in the period 17th September, 2019- 30th September, 2019 is to provide access to safe street food to the consumers by training the Street Food Vendors on “food safety” and “hygiene”.
This initiative is a great way not only to ensure healthy food for consumers thereby safeguarding the health and well-being of people but also enables street food vendors to sustain better livelihoods in new market conditions with increased awareness on the importance to raise the standards for food safety and hygiene.
The programme is an effective way to improve the perceptions and practices of the Street Food Vendors in the State of Meghalaya. During the process, a total of 520 (five hundred twenty) Street Food Vendors of which 430(four hundred and thirty) were trained at Shillong, 48 (forty-eight) at Tura and 42 (forty two) at Sohra.
Certificates, caps, aprons and gloves were distributed to all participants who attended the training programme. The Commissionerate of Food Safety (Health & Family Welfare Department), Meghalaya and Nestlé India Ltd. are looking forward for more such collaborations in future too with participation of training partner, National Association of Street Vendor of India (NASVI).
