Shillong, June 23: The Jaintia Student’s Union has written to the Meghalaya Government requesting for ex- gratia for the family of the six victims who died of the tragedy consuming wild poisonous mushroom.
The President of the JSU Shillong Circle, Treiborlang R Suchen has submitted and placed before the state government a letter of request for allocation of Ex gratia to the family of victims before the office of SDO Amlarem Sub Division and to the Hon’ble MLA of Amlarem constituency,Lahkmen Rymbui.
Mr Treiborlang Suchen said that, between the month of April and May, 2020, six people have died at Lamin village, West Jaintia Hills, Meghalaya because of inadvertently consuming a death cap mushroom.
He also said that ,he has consulted on the matter with the Headman of the village , Mr. Golden Gashnga and he has informed that the Government till date has not lent any financial support to the family and next of kin of the six deceased persons.
Mr Treiborlang further stated that, the family of the six deceased persons are facing hardships ever since their bread owners departed untimely and also that they have remain orphans now with no guardians to look after them.
He also said that the, Government must take an immediate action to provide financial support to the family of the deceased since in other states the state Government did lend a finacial support on the basis of an Ex Gratia to the next of kin of the victims who died of food poisoining
The JSU said that such cases could be relate through a factual and media report where 16 people have died of food poisoning in East Godavari district of May 29,2017 in Andhra Pradesh and the Government of Andhra Pradesh has annouced an ex gratia of rupees 5 lakhs for the victims of the tragedy.
