The current agreement on the border does not acknowledge the sentiments of the people:TMC

Shillong, July 26: The current agreement does not acknowledge the sentiments of the people of Meghalaya. We are trying to draw the attention of the government of India to take cognizance of the sentiments of people and scrap the Assam Meghalaya border agreement New Delhi, 26.07.2022 Dr. Mukul Sangma, Meghalaya TMC MLA.

Today, they have protested in front of the Parliament, the temple of democracy, to make the Government of India take cognizance of the issues of the people of Meghalaya. As politicians, they  are all responsible to defend and protect democratic values, and cultural ethos, as well as taking cognizance of the voices of the people

The Leader of the TMC Dr Mukul  said “ I am very sad to admit that at both the state and the national level, the voices of the people of Meghalaya are falling on deaf ears, My political innings began in 1993. The voices of people are not considered in cognizance by the government of the day”.

In the history of my political innings, it is the first time that such a protest was demonstrated which strongly highlights our frustration, Meghalaya belong to a small state with only two members in the Lok Sabha. However, its added to the diversity of the great nation.

Even though Meghalaya has microscopic in terms of population, our voices would always contribute to the story of the progress of the great nation. He urged the media fraternity to be vigilant to the issues going on in Meghalaya on the long-pending border issue with our counter-part .

Any resolution that is decided upon should be acceptable to the people. The people of Assam and Meghalaya are like brothers and sisters. We are an integral part of the vibrant community of the northeastern states. Meghalaya, which was formerly a part of Assam, received statehood as our forefathers deemed it necessary.

Currently, there are 12 identified areas of difference between the two states. The dispute resolution process must be acceptable to all stakeholders. The government has forgotten that to resolve such a problem, all the stakeholders need to be taken on board.

In the context of Meghalaya, the stakeholders are people to whom the land belongs. In Meghalaya, the local institutions have ownership over the land. Therefore, resistance from the people has sprung up. The government of the day is in the mood to impose a decision which is not consistent with the spirit of democracy.

Language is an indispensable part of our identity. The Garo and Khasi language inclusion would multiply job opportunities for the youth of the state. Equal opportunity for all youth seeking employment must be provided. Due to the deprivation of the youth, palpable disgruntlement is on the rise.

The current government, in terms of managing law and order, is not only incompetent but also insensitive to the youth. The magnitude of problems is terrifying in the northeast. The quantity of drugs, the number of peddlers is proliferating every day.

The policies of the MDA government are encouraging gambling and other vices which are not consistent with our cultural ethos, Dr Mukul said that  when he took charge as CM, the terrorist outfits were operating.

The government employees refused postings due to the dreaded militancy in the state. However, we created a turnaround; when I handed over the state on March 6, 2018, there were no reports of militancy. The kind of work the Meghalaya government has performed to obliterate lawlessness, militancy and terrorism should be treated as a best practice by the Government of India, or any other state fighting against the same issues.

The government must pull up its socks and work to restore peace in the state. On an independence day, a youth roaming around with an AK-47 is a failure on the part of the MDA Government.
