Shillong, Sept 21: Amazon India announced that over 2 lakh sellers including over 1500 from North East India have joined Local Shops on Amazon program since its launch in 2020. Amazon India launched the program to help bring offline retailers, kiranas and local shops online.
Notably, the number of sellers on the program has more than doubled YOY.This festive season customers will be able to shop from some of their favourite local stores in their cities, get deliveries the same/next day and also benefit from value added services offered by these sellers.
To help new sellers kick start their journey, the company recently also announced that new sellers registering on Amazon.in between August 28 to October 26th and launching within 90 days from date of registration shall be eligible to avail 50% waiver on selling fee across all categories.
This is a fee that all sellers pay for selling their products on Amazon India and is a percentage of the total sales price that is paid by the buyer. Over 9000 sellers from the North East region.
Amongst all others from India, are looking forward to benefit from this festive season and will showcase authentic and wide range of products including Raw Honey, Santipuri Bengal Cotton handloom sarees, handmade wicker accessories and Grass and Bamboo items, amongst others.
This includes businesses of all sizes, including local stores, traditional weavers and artisans, women entrepreneurs as well as startups and digital entrepreneurs who are helping expand the vast selection of products available on Amazon India.
Amazon has continued to invest in the North East region to enable sellers to leverage the benefits of selling online and contribute to India’s digital economy. As part of this, to support artisans and weavers, Amazon has partnered with government bodies like Tribal Cooperative Marketing Development Federation of India Limited (TRIFED), Guwahati.
The North Eastern Handicrafts and Handloom Development Corporation (NEHHDC), and Manipur Handloom and Handicrafts Development Corporation Limited (MHHDCL) and launched emporiums like Purbashree and Panthoibi under the Karigar program.
Within six months of its launch on Amazon, Panthoibi emporium’s monthly sales has grown 2x. So far, Amazon hasempowered over 3.5 lakh artisans and weavers from the region through these initiatives.
To enable women entrepreneurs from North East India to accelerate their growth by selling online, Amazon India under Amazon Saheli has partnered with government bodies like Assam Rural Infrastructure and Agricultural Services Society (ARIAS), DeendayalAntyodayaYojana-National Urban Livelihoods Mission (DAY-NULM)Assam, Tripura Urban Livelihood Mission (TULM) and NGOs like Kasturba Gramin Bayan SamabaiSamity Ltd.
This is one of the leading co-operative societies on handloom sector of Kamrup district, in Bijoynagar, Assam. As part of this, Amazon has been able to impact over 5 lakh women entrepreneurs.Last year, Amazon launched the Spotlight Northeast storefront, designed to boost the local economy, create jobs and accelerate financial inclusion and empowerment of women across the 8 states of North East India.

Amazon India has been investing in scaling up infrastructure to enable sellers from anywhere in India to serve customers all over the country. In line with this, the company has set up a network of nearly 40 Amazon-owned and partner delivery stations and close to 110 I have Space stores in North East.
Amazon also has 2Fulfilment Centres in North East with a storage capacity of close to 3.5 lakh cu.ft. and1 Sortation Centre with a sortation area of 50,000 sq.ft, providing job opportunities in the region.
