NEIGRIHMS organised NECME on Bleeding Disorders and North East Haematology Quiz 2023

Shillong, Sept 02: The Departments of Transfusion Medicine and Pathology at the North Eastern Indira Gandhi Regional Institute of Health & Medical Sciences (NEIGRIHMS) in Shillong successfully hosted the North East CME on Bleeding Disorders and North East Haematology Quiz 2023 on September 2, 2023.

The event attracted the participation of approximately 100 delegates and esteemed guest speakers from various states in the North Eastern Region. Bleeding disorders, a largely underdiagnosed and often overlooked health concern, constitute a small but significant section of the population.

The program was thoughtfully organized with the primary objective of highlighting the pressing need to raise awareness about these conditions, particularly in the North East region.

The inaugural program of the CME was graced by distinguished guests, including Prof. Nalin Mehta, Director, NEIGRIHMs, as the Chief Guest, Prof. C. Daniala, Medical Superintendent, as the Guest of Honour, and Sr. Prof. Vandana Raphael, HoD, Department of Pathology, as the Organizing President.

Prof. Nalin Mehta, Director of NEIGRIHMS, emphasized the need to involve doctors of other specialties in such programs to benefit patients with bleeding disorders.

He noted that bleeding disorders are often overlooked by doctors who are not specialists in this area. By involving doctors from other specialties, we can raise awareness of bleeding disorders and improve the diagnosis and management of these conditions.

Senior Prof. Vandana Raphael, Head, Department of Pathology at NEIGRIHMS, mentioned that PG students from the institute have been participating in the Haematology Quiz programs for the past 10 years. She said that quite a few of her students were inspired to take up Haematology super-specialty courses after participating in these programs.

A wide array of topics related to bleeding disorders were deliberated upon by esteemed guest speakers. Prof. (Dr.) R. K. Banashree, a Hematopathologist from JNIMS, Imphal, shared her extensive knowledge and expertise on the diagnosis of thrombocytopenia.

Dr.Irom Anil Singh, a Clinical Haematologist at JNIMS, Imphal, delivered a comprehensive talk on the “Treatment of Haemophilia: Past, Present, and Future”. Dr. Prasad Dange, a Hematopathologist from AIIMS, Guwahati, provided enlightening insights into the diagnosis of Von Willebrand’s Disease (VWD).

A lecture on “Principles of Medical Ethics and its Practical Applications” was delivered by Sr. Prof. (Dr.) P.K. Bhattacharyya, shedding light on ethical considerations in the field of haematology.

Prof. (Dr.) YookarinKhonglah, a Pathologist at NEIGRIHMS, commenced the Scientific Session with an “Overview of Bleeding Disorders”, providing a solid foundation for further discussions.

Furthermore, Dr.LutikaNepram, a specialist in Transfusion Medicine, presented an insightful overview of the scenario of haemophilia in India and the North East, highlighting the challenges and opportunities in managing this condition effectively.

The North East CME on Bleeding Disorders and North East Haematology Quiz 2023 was a resounding success in its mission to increase awareness about underdiagnosed bleeding disorders.

This event facilitated valuable interactions among experts, practitioners, and enthusiasts from the North East, fostering a collaborative environment for advancing haematology knowledge and practice.
