Shillong, December 11: The Deputy Commissioner of East Khasi Hills District Smt. R.M. Kurbah, on 11th of December 2023 launched the Electronic Voting Machine (EVM) Demonstration Van, as a Run up to the Lok Sabha General Election 2024.
Speaking at the event, Kurbah emphasized the importance of voter turnout and civic engagement, aiming for a robust participation in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections in 2024.
She also highlighted the significance of citizen involvement in the electoral process, urging the 6 lakh-plus registered voters to actively participate in the elections.
Drawing attention to the successful voter turnout of over 80% during the recent state MLA elections, she appealed to citizens to exercise their democratic rights and make their voices heard in the forthcoming Lok Sabha polls.
The initiative aims to familiarize citizens, especially those newly enrolled, with the functioning of EVMs. Kurbah assured the public of the machines’ reliability, emphasizing their foolproof nature following extensive testing and scrutiny in the presence of political party representatives and thorough CCTV coverage.
The Demonstration Van, equipped with tested machines, will traverse various areas for public viewing and awareness. Kurbah clarified that these machines are solely for training and awareness purposes and will not be used in actual elections.
Additionally, she welcomed citizens to visit the office for firsthand experience with the machines, aiming to instill confidence and eliminate doubts regarding the election process.
Expressing gratitude to all involved, Kurbah launched this initiative as Phase 1 in East Khasi Hills, with plans for subsequent phases. She encouraged individuals, especially those turning 18, to engage in this empowering opportunity to understand the voting process and reinforce faith in the country’s electoral system.
