HNLC calls bandh to oppose Republic-Day celebration

Shillong, Jan 22: The 64th Republic Day celebration in Meghalaya will again witness opposition from the proscribed Hynniewtrep National Liberation Council (HNLC) who called for a twenty-one hour bandh which will be effective from 10 pm of January 25 to 6 pm on January 26.

In a press statement issued by the HNLC publicity secretary Sainkupar Nongtraw, it was informed that er church goers, ambulances and members of the press are excluded as they will be permitted to move during the bandh.

Nongtraw said, “The bandh is to show our strong protest against the illegal celebration of the Republic day in the state.”

According to the HNLC, Meghalaya did not get the so claimed republic with its consent but was forcibly made to sign the instrument of accession and annexed agreement in 1948.  Nongtraw said, “We are victims under Indian Terrorism.”

Meanwhile, the HNLC urged the public to cooperate and lend their support.
