Shillong, May 25: The Hynñiewtrep Youths’ Council (HYC) expresses its deep concern and strong dissatisfaction over the continuously rising prices of petrol, diesel and domestic cooking gas (LPG), which are placing an unbearable burden on the people of Meghalaya.
The increase in the prices of these essential commodities has directly affected every section of society, particularly daily wage earners, farmers, small business owners, transport operators, students and economically weaker families.
The rising fuel prices have resulted in increased transportation costs and a subsequent rise in the prices of essential commodities and services, making everyday life more difficult for ordinary citizens. Likewise, the increasing cost of cooking gas has become a serious challenge for households already struggling under growing economic pressure and inflation.
The HYC strongly believes that the Government cannot remain a silent spectator while the people continue to suffer. Fuel and cooking gas are basic necessities and not luxury items, and it is the responsibility of the Government to ensure that citizens are not subjected to excessive financial hardships.
The HYC therefore calls upon the Government of Meghalaya to immediately intervene by reviewing State taxes and levies on fuel, pursuing special relief measures and subsidies for Meghalaya, and taking concrete steps to ease the burden on citizens.
The Government must also actively engage with the concerned authorities to ensure that the interests and welfare of the people remain protected.
The HYC warns that public frustration is steadily growing and urges the Government to act without delay before the situation worsens further. The Council stands firmly with the people and reiterates that governance must always prioritize the welfare and needs of its citizens.
