Shillong, July 31: Khun Hynniewtrep National Awakening Movement (KHNAM) Youth wing has written to the Chief Executive Member of the KHADC and the Executive Member incahrge labour saying that the Youth Wing from time to time have been conducting surprise checking of labour licence at various location due to concern over the growing influx of illegal immigrants in the State.
KHNAM mention in the memorandum that after the notification of the final NRC in the State of Assam, there is a fear that these illegal immigrants could penetrate into other States as labours. Meghalaya has being a soft target to illegal immigrants for the last five decades and most of these illegal immigrants have found safe haven in Meghalaya in the name of cheap labour. Therefore, there is an urgent need for the KHADC to be a partner to curbed illegal influx.
KHNAM youth wing said that they would like to report, that they had carried out a surprise inspection of a project undertaken by L&T Company at a site located at NEIGRIHMS and hundreds of labourers working at this project do not have a labour licence from the KHADC, these labourers have made temporary shelters at the site and labourers are on regular shift between Assam and Meghalaya.
KHNAM mention that it is reported that these labourers could be illegal immigrants whose name have not been included in the NRC of Assam. Almost 40 lakhs people have not been included in the Final NRC of Assam and this is a very big reason for the KHADC to adopt additional measures to ensure that our identity if protected at all time.
The KHADC have been very ineffective on the issue of labourers operating without labour licence, from time to time we have witness that it is the NGOs or other organisation that have been performing the job of the KHADC and enforcement, which is very irregular. If the KHADC still shy away from its duties and responsibilities other organisation will be force to take up the matter for the security of the indigenous tribes of the State.
