Shillong, February 27: The Minister of State, Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region and Education, Dr. Sukanta Majumdar visited the State on February 26, 2025 and held a meeting with senior government officials to review the various schemes and projects funded by the Ministry.
In the review, minister expressed satisfaction with the overall performance of the State in the implementation of MDoNER projects and highlighted that the allocation provided under various schemes of the ministry has been mostly utilized by the State. It was added that for the remaining balance funds, the State will be submitting proposals shortly.
The Minister also emphasized the importance of expediting the completion of certain projects. The State Government reaffirmed its commitment in expediting the completion of these works at the earliest.
During the Visit, the Minister of the State call upon the Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma at his residence, where they engaged in a productive discussion on key issues pertaining to the State, including the proposed Hilli – Mahindraganj transnational economic corridor.
The Hilli – Mahindraganj project aims to enhance connectivity between West Bengal and Meghalaya through Bangladesh by providing an alternative route to the congested NH27 Siliguri corridor, known as Chicken’s Neck.
The corridor will significantly reduce travel time and cost, alleviating logistical pressures and boosting economic development in the region.The leaders discussed the potential impact of this road, which is expected to reduce travel distances from 600 Km to just 85 Km.
The project also holds significance as Hilli is within the constituency represented by Dr. Sukanta Majumdar. The visit underscored the Hon’ble Minister of State’s strong commitment to fostering the State’s overall development and ensuring the effective utilization of resources provided by the Ministry.
