More than 70% of the cancers in Meghalaya are related to tobacco-related: Dr. Caleb

Shillong, August 01: Department of Surgical Oncology, NEIGRIHMS and Department of Medical Surgical Nursing, College of Nursing, NEIGRIHMS organized a poster making competition on the theme “Be Aware and Be Safe” in observance of World Lung Cancer Day on the 1st of August, 2023 at NEIGRIHMS.

This event was supported by Northeast India Association of Surgical Oncology (NASO). Around hundred BSc. and MSc. students (Medical Surgical Nursing Dept.) actively participated in the competition.

Prof. (Dr.) C. Daniala, Medical Superintendent, NEIGRIHMS, and one of the judges expressed that the posters were informative and captivating. Dr. Caleb Harris, Associate Professor, Department of Surgical Oncology and Prof. Nochovono Tase, Principal, College of Nursing, NEIGRIHMS were the other judges.

Dr. Caleb Harris said that more than 70% of the cancers in Meghalaya are related to tobacco-related, with 47% of the adult population in Meghalaya using tobacco, in comparison to the national average of 28.6%.

The posters, according to him were engrossing. Prof. Nochovono Tase said that these posters will aid in spreading awareness on Lung Cancer. Prof. Namita Singha, HOD, Department of Medical Surgical Nursing & Vice Principal, College of Nursing, NEIGRIHMS commended creativity of the students who participated.

The winners will be given cash prizes and certificates, apart from participation certificates for all. The best posters will be displayed in different areas of the hospital for patient awareness.
