Shillong, May 09: Mr John Kharshiing today writes to the Chief Minister of Meghalaya Mr Conrad K Sangma demanding for urgent need for notification of a Meghalaya State Commission on Inter-State Boundary on the areas of conflict in the Border Areas of Meghalaya along Assam.
In the letter sent to the Chief Minister today Mr Kharshiing said that the conflict and assault to Mr. Michael Warjri, Secretary, Hima Nongspung Syiemship, and a resident at Balakawa Village, along Assam- Meghalaya Border under Jirang C&RD, Ri Bhoi District, Meghalaya, he urge the State Government to constitute a Meghalaya State Commission on Inter-State Boundary, which would be mandated to look into the challenges that keep arising due to the status quo and difficulty in resolving the Assam Meghalaya Boundary since last 67 years since Independence.
From time to time our people are compelled to face conflict situation and tension along Border areas especially areas under dispute with Assam and Bangladesh.The non-resolution of the treaty agreement and delay in defining the true jurisdiction of the ” Khasi States” as described in the First Schedule, and based on the Instrument of Accession and Annexed Agreement of 17 August 1948, is another cause for these human rights voilation at the border areas.
He urge the Government to take strong action against those criminals who have taken law into their own hands and to provide immediate relief to those affected and to take urgent steps for the release of Shri. Michael Warjri, who we now learn has been wrongly put in Jail by the Assam Police.
He strongly urge the State Government to kindly consider constititution and notification of a Meghalaya State Commission on Inter-State Boundary to address these issues quarterly so that it prevents unwarranted conflicts between communities and loss of precious life.
