Shillong, February 08: A BJP delegation led by BJP MLA Shri Sanbor Shullai, along with state president Shri Rikman G Momin and other senior party leaders met Union Minister of State for Defence Shri Sanjay Seth on 29th January and appraised him about the sudden increase in land rent tax which has adversely affected the lessees of Shillong Cantonment area.
Shri Shullai has requested that the Shillong Cantonment Board, which falls under the Directorate General of Defence Estate, creates an inquiry to look into the manner in which STR has been hiked in the year 2009, which is in violation of the provision laid down in 1937 CLAR .
The rates which had seen uniform increase since 199, suddenly witnessed an abnormal hike in the year 2009 which had a negative effect on the residents. Shri Sambor Shullai stated that the fight for justice will continue till the matter is resolved in favour of the residents.
The delegation which also met the Director General of DGDE Shri G.S Rajeswaran is highly optimistic that the matter shall be resolved at the earliest.
Shullai said that he is likely to invite the Union Minister of State for Defence in the month of April as the minister has shown keen interest in visiting Shillong.
Meghalaya BJP is committed to finding solutions to issues that affect common citizens; to ensuring that there is no disparity between the residents of the municipal and cantonment areas in relation to taxes.
Even in the future, Meghalaya BJP will fight any discrepancy in taxes, be it municipal or cantonment areas stated Shullai.
