Shillong, April 20: The country stood at the cusp of creating history with the Constitution (131st Amendment) Bill, the Delimitation Bill, and the Union Territories Laws (Amendment). A new dawn of democratic future and enhanced women participation in legislature was set to become reality.
Enter Congress with its comrades – TMC, DMK and Samajwadi Party, dashing the hopes and aspirations of half the country’s population. Every woman in this country has been betrayed by a self-serving group which refuse to come out of their medieval mind set; a mind set that simply refuses to accept women as equal partners.
Yet again these parties have got together to commit an unpardonable sin against the women of Meghalaya and the country, a sin which will neither be forgotten nor forgiven.
Taking a strong stand against this anti-women attitude of the Opposition, Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi presented the truth before the nation. He clearly stated that this was not a moment for politics, but for taking a decision in national interest.
He emphasized that giving half the population of the country a share in policymaking is not a favour, but their natural right which Congress and its allies hjave kept hostage for decades.
Union Home Minister Shri Amit Shah Ji made it clear in the House that the primary objective of these Bills was to effectively implement the core constitutional principle of “one person, one vote, one value.” Delimitation is a constitutional obligation that has been postponed for a long time, leading to a serious imbalance in representation. BJP Meghalaya urges people to not fall for the lies spread by the Congress.
BJP Meghalaya takes pride in and celebrates our matrilineal heritage where women are given unrestrained powers, where women are at the forefront of every activity in society.
The opportunity of ensured enhanced representation of women in representative bodies came as a reflection of our own social ethos, customs and culture. The behaviour of the opposition parties that was witnessed on the 16th and 17th of April, which included shameless clapping when the bill was defeated, has left us disgusted, bitter and heart broken.
That being said, the fight will go on as the Honourable Prime Minister Narendra Modi Ji himself promised. Together we will give our mothers and sisters of Meghalaya, and of the entire nation, their rightful place in legislative decision making.
