The CGA of the State LA inspected, indoor stadium,the Mawkhanu football stadium

Shillong, May 26: The Committee on Government Assurances of the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly on Tuesday inspected three projects being implemented by the state government which includes the indoor stadium at Umsawli, the Mawkhanu Football Stadium, in East Khasi Hills district and Water Sports Facilities at Umtham, Ri-Bhoi district.

The delegation was led by Committee Chairman and Hon’ble MLA, Renikton Lyngdoh Tongkhar, and members Dr. M. Ampareen Lyngdoh, MLA – East Shillong, Dr. Celestine Lyngdoh, MLA – Umsning, and Ollan Singh Suin, MLA – Mawsynram.

The officials present during the visit were, Sanjay D Shira Mawryngkneng Block Development Officer, Manhiam Marbaniang, Chief Engineer (Sports) and representatives from the contractor constructing the football stadium.

Tongkhar said he was proud that the biggest football ground in India is being built in the state. “We must thank Chief Minister Conrad Sangma for his initiative in bringing this project to Meghalaya,” Shri Tongkhar said.

The Committee Chairman expressed satisfaction with the progress of work and said the project is expected to be completed on time. The deadline for completion of this football only, 40,000-seater stadium is the latter part of 2028 as per the tender agreement and its is being implemented by KPC Projects limited.

The committee also visited the Water Sports Centre at Umtham and the tennis court at Umsawli. The Hon’ble Chairman said he was pleased to see the progress made in New Shillong, particularly in road infrastructure.

“It surprised me and the other members to see the development taking place here in New Shillong,” Shri Tongkhar said. He added that he hopes all projects undertaken in New Shillong will be completed on time so that citizens can use the infrastructure being created.

Mawkhanu Football Stadium is a 40,000-capacity football-specific stadium under construction in Mawkhanu within New Shillong, in the East Khasi Hills district of Meghalaya, India.

The project, estimated at Rs. 732 crore, is being developed by the Government of Meghalaya as part of a wider effort to establish the state as a major football hub in India.

Umtham is emerging as Meghalaya’s premier hub for whitewater adventure, known for river canoeing, kayaking, and rafting. The state is building a Rs 21 crore, 14-acre dedicated canoe slalom course here to serve as a national training facility and boost adventure tourism.
