Shillong, May 15: Toljawa Lake, nestled amongst lush green vegetation is a tranquil expanse of pristine water located at Kumligaon under Betasing C&RD Block of South West Garo Hills district. A kaleidoscope of avian species graces its shores year-round, adorning the landscape with a vibrant palette of colors and songs.
The lake also known as Kumali, is the largest fishery project in Meghalaya. The lake is spread over approximately 250 bighas (52.83 acres) of community land and its placid waters have become a vital sanctuary for both indigenous and visiting species of fauna.
The lake is home to a variety of flora that forms a protective cloak surrounding the lakes’ expanse. Delicate water lilies add a touch of elegance with their blooms to the surrounding expanse.
A hillock beside the lake is sacred to the locals as they believe it is the deity Naribhita who looks after the lake and all creatures dwelling within it.
Amrit Sarovar, a scheme under the Union Ministry of Rural Development which aims at conserving water for the future by rejuvenating water bodies (Ponds) have been implemented to preserve the serene lake.
The fishery department has also released several species of fish fingerlings into the lake to enhance the aquatic population of the water body.
With the onset of winter, Kumali Lake undergoes a transformation as it evolves into a sanctuary for migratory birds fleeing the chill of distant lands. Among its feathered visitors are whistling ducks, their calls echoing across the tranquil waters.
Toljawa Lake is looked after by a devoted Lake Committee who acknowledges the importance of conservation. Under the stewardship of the lake committee and its diligent and tireless advocacy the lake remains a sanctuary for not only its resident wildlife but also for the myriad of visitors who seek solace within its embrace.
