Shillong, Sept 26: NEHU-Deen Dayal Upadhyay Community College for Skill Development, Wahiajer, West Jaintia Hills, a constituent college of North-Eastern Hill University (NEHU), successfully hosted a six-day Skill Up-gradation Training Programme on “Handmade Knitting and Embroidery” from 19th to 25th September 2024. The programme concluded on the 25th of September, marking the 108th Annual Birth Anniversary of (L) Pt. Deen Dayal Upadhyay.
The primary objective of the programme was to empower the local youth by equipping them with essential vocational skills that can lead to economic independence and sustainable livelihoods. The training programme sought to foster social inclusion through either wage employment or self-employment.
During the six days, 100 artisans were provided with hands-on training and practical demonstrations. The sessions covered cutting, stitching, and the utilization of various trimmings, enabling participants to enhance their craft skills significantly.
The Valedictory Programme was graced by Col. Omkar Singh (Retd), Registrar, NEHU, as the Chief Guest, and Prof. H. Lamin (Retd), Founder Principal In-charge of DDUCC, as the Guest of Honour.
In their addresses, both dignitaries emphasized the cultural significance of knitting in India and its importance as a timeless craft. They acknowledged the rich heritage of knitting in the country, noting that it dates back to ancient civilizations.
Prof. S. M. Sungoh, Principal In-charge, DDUCC, along with Dr. F. R. Sumer, Librarian, NEHU, and Shri. Sanwotki Laloo, Headman of Wahiajer, reiterated the enduring value of knitting and embroidery in India.
They highlighted how online communities and marketplaces have rejuvenated these crafts, ensuring their continued relevance in contemporary times and promising a bright future for artisans.
The event concluded with vibrant cultural activities by students and participants, followed by a cake-cutting ceremony. Certificates were distributed to all participants, recognizing their achievements. The programme came to a close with a vote of thanks from Shri. Wolnish Rymbai, Programme Coordinator.
This initiative is a part of NEHU’s broader commitment to promoting vocational education and skill development, in line with the vision of Pt. Deen Dayal Upadhyay, whose birth anniversary was celebrated with great fervor and respect.
