NEIGRIHMS Cardiologist performs lifesaving heart procedure

Shillong, July 02: The department of Cardiology, NEIGRIHMS has made another niche by performing minimally invasive heart wall intervention on a 27-year-old young girl who was suffering from a severe valve leakage and an intractable right sided heart failure as a sequela of her previous open heart surgery performed decade earlier for hole in the heart.
Second open-heart surgery was fraught with high morbidity and mortality. The multidisciplinary Heart Team at NEIGRIHMS led by Prof. Animesh Mishra, HOD,
Cardiology, the supporting faculties Prof. Manish Kapoor and Prof. Amit Malviya performed a successful trans-catheter tricuspid valve repair (TTVR) in close collaboration with CTVS and Anesthesia Department.
This was also made possible by the technical support from Meril Life Sciences. The procedure took almost three hours and the patient is recovering fast in Intensive Cardiac Care Unit (ICCU).
This is a landmark procedure in the entire eastern India to have been performed for the first time at NEIGRIHMS. So far only eight (8) such kind of procedures are performed across the country.
NEIGRIHMS cardiologists achieved the feat of performing such procedure at young
age which is first time in India. It is also noteworthy that NEIGRIHMS performed this procedure with less than half the cost incurred elsewhere in India.
This has opened a vista for large number of patients who are suffering from intractable heart failure due to leakage of valves in
North East India.
Prof. Animesh Mishra, Head of Cardiology and Heart Team Leader, informed that “For these subsets of patients, conventional surgery carried an extremely high risk.
By successfully performing this complex trans-cath eter valve replacement, we were able to offer a life-saving, minimally invasive treatment that is available only at a few select centers across India.
Prof. Nalin Mehta, Director NEIGRIHMS congratulated the multidisciplinary team and praised their commitment in delivering world-class yet affordable healthcare. A Milestone for Eastern India this achievement further strengthens NEIGRIHMS as a centre for advanced cardiac interventions through teamwork and patient-centric care.
