I prefer to go back to the parliament, so that the problems of Meghalaya and Garo hills can be resolved

Tura, May 16: National People’s Party chief and former Lok Sabha
speaker, Purno Agitok Sangma, who won the Tura Lok Sabha seat for the
10th term asserted with confidence that Narendra Modi will accommodate
all parties, who had forged a pre-poll alliance.

Interacting with media at his residence, Sangma said, “Modi had
indicated that the BJP is expected to win in more than 272 plus
constituencies, which has come true. He has given his commitment to
all parties, who had forged a pre-poll alliance. It will be a NDA
government led by BJP in New Delhi”.

On his representation in the new cabinet formation under Modi, Sangma
said, “I don’t aspire for any position in the cabinet. I prefer to go
back to the parliament, so that the problems of Meghalaya and Garo
hills can be resolved. I am happy that I am elected for the 10th term.
I will perform to the best of my ability”.

When asked about possibility of his and Neiphu Rio in the cabinet,
Sangma said, “It is the prerogative of the Prime Minister, he has the
clarity and the vision to lead the county. He knows with whom he wants
to make his team”.

On a lighter note, when asked, would he consider if offered the
speaker’s chair once again, Sangma said, “Once it is enough? I may be
blunt about it, when I got first class first MA, why I should go for
double MA. I did well in my first exam, what if I get third?”

Purno has a record of winning Lok Sabha election with a margin always
above 80,000, on the neck to neck battle outcome against political
greenhorn Congress candidate, Daryl William Momin, Sangma said, “We
were fighting against money, different kinds of elements sponsored by
the head of the state, false propaganda, false promises and against
the entire state machinery. There were 13 Congress MLAs, more than 20
MDCs, it was a big task. They were campaigning on a helicopter and I
on a wheel-chair”.

Sangma who led the campaign on the prevailing law and order situation
and growing militancy in Garo hills said, “People have realised the
situation, this realization of the people will sincerely bring a
change in Garo hills”.
On the demand for Garoland, he said, “It is the ultimate aim but don’t
expect change overnight. I will convince all political parties and I
am sure NDA will give birth to 50 new states, including Khasi-Jaintia
and Garoland”.(SP News)
