Shillong, April 12: In view of the escalating human crisis in Myanmar, The North East Students’ Organisation (NESO), representing eight major students’ movements of the seven North Eastern States hosted a meeting via video conferencing and discussed the present volatile situation in Myanmar especially the plight of the affected people seeking shelter in the North Eastern States.
Due to the ongoing conflict in Myanmar where human rights were brazenly violated, a sizeable number of Myanmar citizens are seeking shelter and escape from military oppression across the international border of the states of Mizoram and Manipur in which currently, there are already quite a number of people who have already entered Mizoram and Manipur.
The NESO adopted the resolutions in the meeting, the organisation expresses shock and grieve at the heavy loss of life in the ongoing bloodshed in the aftermath of the coup of the democratically elected Government by the military junta; thereby trampling democracy and human rights under the military boots.
The NESO strongly condemns the inhumane atrocities committed by the Military junta against its’ own people causing a mass exodus and refugee problem to the neighbouring countries.
The NESO urge the Government of India to prevail in its capacity to the Myanmar Military Junta to stop bloodshed and loss of lives and to seek the immediate restoration of democracy in the said country.
A discussion was held on the resemblance of the culture, heritage, ethnicity, history and identity of the Myanmarese ethnic groups specifically from the Sagaing Region and Chin State where the North East indigenous communities specifically of the states of Mizoram, Nagaland, Manipur and Arunachal Pradesh who also shares a common international border.
Based on the affinities between these people of the two regions, the meeting decided to urge the Central Government of India with the consent of state governments of Mizoram, Manipur, Nagaland and Arunachal Pradesh to properly address the plight of the Myanmarese nationals who are seeking shelter in these four states and to provide the necessary temporary support to these shelter seekers until the situation in Myanmar improved and they be sendback to their homeland.
At the same time the NESO is reiterating its stand on the illegal inflow of Bangladeshis who have entered the region that they should be deported, demand for implementation of ILP in the other Northeastern states, implementation of all Clauses of Assam Accord, opposition to Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA), deportation of Chakma and Hajong refugees from Arunachal Pradesh, the non application of the Indo-Nepal Treaty of Friendship 1950 in the North Eastern Region.
The NESO also demand that total implementation of all the recommendations of the high power Committee constituted by Government of India on Clause 6 of Assam Accord, said Mr. Samuel B Jyrwa Chairman and Mr. Sinam Prakash Singh Secretary General of the North East Students’ Organisation in the press statement issued today.
