Shillong, Oct O4: As part of the observation of Senior Citizen Week in the State, Meghalaya Social Welfare Minister Smti. Deborah C. Marak along with the Director of Social Welfare department Mr. H.M. Shangpliang and senior departmental officials paid a visit to the Mercy Home, located at Demthring, Shillong on 3rd October, 2013. The week long observation is being observed from 1st to 7th October, 2013.
It may be mentioned that the Mercy Home was established in 1973 and is run by the Sister of Charity of St. Bartlomea Capitanio and Vincenza Geroza. At present there are 39 old persons which include 23 females and 16 males in the Mercy Home and the oldest inmate of the Home is Smti Prin Mary Pale who is 105 years old. The Superior of the Mercy Home is Sister Mildred M.
Speaking on the occasion Smti. Marak said that the Week was being observed to remind the world about the tremendous contribution made by older people to the society. Appreciating the valuable service rendered by the Sisters of the Mercy Home for the welfare of senior citizens, Smti. Marak said that it is our bounded duty to respect old people. To mark the visit, the Minister also distributed blankets to all the inmates of the Mercy Home. (SP News)
